Miami Approves Real-Life GTA 6 Ad Campaign — and the Money Will Help Renovate a Soccer Field

One of the most anticipated games in history is getting a “real world” version — literally. Miami Beach’s city commission approved, in a tight vote, a Rockstar Games advertising campaign that will use the city itself as a backdrop to promote GTA 6.

  • 4-3 vote
that’s how commissioners approved the campaign, in a close decision.

The plan is subtle, at least officially: instead of plastering public buildings or monuments with the game’s name, the “Vice City” branding and the roman numeral “VI” will appear on beach chairs and umbrellas run by Boucher Brothers, between October 15 and December 31 — right around the game’s launch, set for November 19 on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.

What the city gets out of it

In exchange for using the city as part of its marketing, Rockstar will pay the public coffers an amount expected to land somewhere between a few million dollars.

  • $3-4 million
is what Rockstar will pay Miami Beach’s city government.

That money, according to the city, will help fund, among other things, the renovation of Flamingo Park’s soccer field — a local infrastructure project partly bankrolled by one of the biggest game franchises in the world.

Not everyone was on board

The vote was closely fought, and debate at the commission meeting got tense. Commissioner David Suarez went as far as showing GTA 5 and GTA 6 gameplay clips during the session itself to underline his concerns about the game’s content — violence, car theft, and crimes against police being publicly tied to the city.

Among the toughest critics were Miami-Dade County Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz and Commissioner Juan Carlos Bermudez, who questioned what kind of message a campaign like this would send about Miami.

On the other side, supporters of the deal didn’t mince words either. Commissioner Tanya Katzoff Bhatt argued: “This is coming to Miami Beach whether we like it or not, and pretending otherwise means missing an opportunity.” Another supporter pushed back on critics even more bluntly, saying the city “wasn’t handing out pistols and cocaine to people” just by accepting the sponsorship.

Either way, it’s a curious chapter in how the line between fiction and reality keeps blurring when a game is already a cultural phenomenon before it even ships. Miami becoming part of the marketing for a game set in a fictional version of itself is the kind of thing that only happens when the hype around a launch outgrows the game itself.
