Dota 2 Releases Trove of Terror: Tidehunter Gets Its First Arcana After 12 Years

Valve released Dota 2’s Halloween event for this year, the Trove of Terror, on October 6. The biggest headline is something players have asked for over a decade: Tidehunter just got his first Arcana, 12 years after joining the game.

Maw of the Megalodon: Tidehunter becomes an actual shark

The new Arcana, called Maw of the Megalodon, turns Tidehunter’s entire body into a bipedal megalodon wielding a massive anchor, and comes with a new model, exclusive animations, visual effects, taunts, and its own voice lines. One grim detail: he’s dragging the skeletal remains of another hero, Kunkka, a direct nod to the rivalry between the two within Dota’s maritime lore.

What’s in the Trove of Terror

  • Tidehunter Arcana “Maw of the Megalodon,” the hero’s first ever, with 3 unlockable shark styles
  • Drow Ranger Arcana Rerun of “Dread Retribution” (2021), bundled with the new “Sepulchral Stalker” set
  • 15 new Immortal sets All horror/eldritch themed
  • New looks For both Tormentor and Roshan
  • Price About $5 per chest opened, with both Arcanas at the top Ultra Rare rarity

Drow Ranger’s Arcana returns

Besides the Tidehunter news, the chest also brings back the Dread Retribution Arcana for Drow Ranger, originally released in 2021. It’s bundled with a new set called “Sepulchral Stalker,” at the same Ultra Rare rarity as Tidehunter’s Arcana.

Roshan and Tormentor get new looks too

Opening enough chests also unlocks new appearances for the map’s two most important neutral targets: the Tormentor (the bounty creature added not too long ago) and Roshan himself, now with an “incomprehensible horror” look, matching the rest of the event’s theme.

Valve’s official announcement, written as narrative flavor text (in the style the company usually goes for with these events), jokes that the Trove “made itself,” as if the developers were just a conduit for something arriving “from beyond the limits of reason.” It’s the usual Halloween sense of humor, but behind it is a solid content package: 15 sets, 2 Arcanas, and new looks for the game’s two most iconic targets.
