Xbox Game Pass May Lose Day-One Games in 2027 — Microsoft Won’t Rule It Out

A leak has been gaining traction over the past few days among the Xbox community: according to ResetEra user Slayven — who has accurately shared Game Pass information in the past — Microsoft is reportedly planning a major overhaul of the service for early 2027, removing exactly the perk that draws in the most subscribers: access to new games on their release day.

What the leak claims

According to Slayven, the changes would land between February and April 2027 and include two main points: removing day-one games from the Game Pass Ultimate catalog, and turning cloud streaming (Xbox Cloud Gaming) into a separate paid add-on instead of a benefit bundled into the subscription.

A response that denies nothing

Asked by press, Microsoft neither confirmed nor ruled out the rumors. The official response was carefully worded to avoid closing any doors:

“We don’t have any changes to announce today or plans that have been finalized. There are no changes to previously announced games coming to Game Pass Ultimate on day one.”

— Microsoft spokesperson, in a statement

Notice exactly what the statement says: it guarantees that already-announced games keep arriving on day one — but says nothing about future, not-yet-announced titles. It’s the kind of answer that raises more questions than it settles, and one the Xbox community has already learned to read as “not a lie, but not quite a denial either.”

What’s reportedly on the table

  • Timing: between February and April 2027 According to leaker Slayven, on ResetEra
  • Day-one games: possibly removed from Game Pass Ultimate One of the subscription’s biggest selling points since launch
  • Cloud Gaming: could become a separate paid add-on Currently bundled into the Ultimate tier
  • Microsoft’s stance: neither confirms nor denies “No plans finalized” — but doesn’t rule out the rest

Why it matters

Day-one access to new releases has been one of Xbox Game Pass’s biggest advantages over the competition since the service launched — letting subscribers play titles like Starfield, Forza Motorsport, or Indiana Jones and the Great Circle the moment they come out, at no extra cost. If Microsoft really does walk away from that model, it would mark a significant strategy shift, possibly tied to financial pressure on the service’s profitability.

For now, nothing is officially confirmed. Microsoft only said it “regularly tests different Game Pass offerings” — a generic answer that neither confirms nor closes the discussion.
