After more than three decades of partnership, PlayStation has decided to pull its support for Physint, Kojima Productions’ upcoming action-espionage game — and Xbox stepped in to keep the project alive.

According to international outlets, Sony told Hideo Kojima’s team back in mid-June that it planned to cancel the project. Kojima Productions then spent the following three months looking for a new partner — and found one willing to back the game: Microsoft.
- 3 months
is how long it took Kojima Productions to find a new partner.
PlayStation never gave an official reason for the cancellation, which left plenty of room for speculation. The most widely accepted explanation is that the game’s budget ballooned and that Sony would only have held temporary exclusivity, not permanent — a big difference for a publisher weighing whether a project of that scale is still worth funding.
Decades of partnership coming to an end
What’s most striking is that the new relationship between Xbox and Kojima Productions likely won’t stop at games: the two companies are already talking about collaborating on movies and TV series set in the Physint universe, extending the deal well beyond the game itself.
- 3 decades
of partnership between Kojima and PlayStation come to an end with Physint’s cancellation.
It’s one of those cases that shows how even decades-long relationships in the games industry can turn on a dime once money and exclusivity enter the conversation. Kojima built much of his career alongside PlayStation — from Metal Gear Solid to Death Stranding — and watching that bond come undone so publicly is big news for anyone following the industry’s inner workings.
It’s worth remembering this isn’t the first time a major industry name has switched houses over disagreements with a publisher. What stands out here is the sheer size of the historical bond between Kojima and the PlayStation brand, built over practically his entire career — which makes this split symbolically heavier than a simple contract swap.
It remains to be seen whether Physint will keep the identity fans expect from a Kojima-signed game, now under the umbrella of a different publisher than the one that backed him for so long. And, of course, there’s the lingering question: will we see more Kojima Productions projects migrate platforms from here on out?
